菫とは散文的なあいだがら
My relationship with the violets is prosaic
|
どんな場所に咲いても、スミレは詩的なことばで迎えられる。大きな靴に踏みしだかれても、毎年、楚々とした花のたたずまいを見せながら、
道行く人のこころを呼びとめる。スミレの花が好きなのに、わが脳細胞は散文的バージョンだ。
| No matter where they bloom, violets are welcomed with poetic words. Even when trod upon by large shoes, violets display their beautiful, unspoiled flowers each year and catch the hearts of passersby. Although I am fond of the violets’ flowers, my brain cells are of a prosaic version.

フクロウは森の賢者。国立フクロウ大学の独立行政法人化への動きが急ピッチで進められている。それに対しての賛同派、反対派。
しかし、フクロウ村の住民には、明瞭なる意見は伝わってこない。
Owls are sages of the forest. The transformation of Owl National University into an independent administrative institution has been progressing apace. Some support it, and others oppose it. Explicit opinions, however, do not reach the residents of the Owl Village.

沸騰するまでげんげ畑は歌います
| The milk vetch field sings until boiling
|
田起し前のたんぼには、レンゲ草が一面に敷きつめられて。子どもたちは母の作った草餅を近所に配るのが仕事だったっけ。
それから、それからレンゲの花のむしろに寝転がって歌ったっけ。遊びつかれて家路に着くころは、
手に握られていたレンゲ草が道ばたに捨てられていたっけ。
| Before tilling, the paddy fields are full of Chinese milk vetch. The children’s task was to distribute the mugwort-flavored rice cakes, which their mothers had made, about the neighborhood. This I recall. And then …and then, as I recall, they lay down on a bed of milk vetch flowers and sang. When they headed back home after becoming exhausted from playing, I remember how they discarded the milk vetches they had been holding in their hands at the side of the road.
