　秋暑し歩けば騒ぐ紙袋
aki atushi　arukeba sawagu　kami bukuro

even walking draws complaints

　作者と紙袋との、つつましい一体感は、軽快なように見えて、実は重くるしい雰囲気 に満ち満ちているようだ。いつまでも秋の顔をみせない今年の暑さ続きには、もうぐ ったり。紙袋も、おんなあるじの呼吸の気配に押されて、サワサワサワと揺れ騒ぐ。
　もの言いたげな紙袋の素朴な表情が手に取るように見えてくる。「秋暑し　歩けば」 の、頭韻もまた楽し。（文・近　三津子）

　The simple oneness of the author and a humble paper bag is, upon closer inspection, rife with deeper emotions. This year the summer heat has lasted for ever, and even though it is well into autumn, the thermometer refuses to cooperate. In this enervating atmosphere even little things start to annoy, like the rustling of a paper shopping bag, maybe swinging in the hands of a passing matron, or maybe the walking author's own bag.


曼珠沙華孤立無援は好きですか
manjushage koritsu muen wa suki desu ka?

oh amaryllis,
so lonely and isolate,
are you there by choice?

　世の中のけん騒を横目に、露を身に受けながら、静かにたたずむ姿は、確かに何かしらの「悟りの世界」を、現しているようにも見える。それが作者をして「孤立無援」 と言わせたのであろう。この花は毎年、秋の彼岸時期になると草むらや、石塔の蔭など、同じところに必ず咲いている。「まるでカレンダーを知っているみたい」という表現がぴったのり花。一本だけぽつんと咲いている曼珠沙華「孤立無援は好きですか」

　Looking askance at the bustle of the world, drinking deeply of the morning dew, in the corner quietly loitering, there is a definite air of satori about the solitary flower, "so lonely and isolate", in this scene.
　"Manjushage" is one of many names for "higan-bana", the cluster amaryllis, so-called because it flowers around "aki no higan", the autumnal eqinox. As if by volition, it always sprouts in the same place every year, be it from amidst a bunch of weeds, or in the shade of a tombstone, and so the author wonders if, in this case, the isolation from the world is self imposed.


水鏡せんと倒るる曼珠沙華

　ヒガンバナ。日本中どこでも見られる親しみ深い花でありながら、ときに忌み嫌われる花だ。寺や墓地などでよく見られることから、死や地獄などを連想するためであろうか。この花はたくさんの名前を持っていることでも知られているが、全国で６００にも及ぶという。曼珠沙華が、みずからの輪郭を知るために水辺に、うずくまったという幻想的なシーン。色彩が鮮烈であればあるほど倒れた瞬間の、艶めいた空気が伝わってくる。（文・近　三津子）

　"Manjushage" is yet another name for "higan-bana", the cluster amaryllis, which is said to have as many as 600 names Japan-wide. This common flower can be found all over, typically around temples and in cemetaries, leading to it having a rather dark and gloomy image. Here a flower sprouting at the water's edge is imagined to be hunching over the limpid surface so as to admire the image of its own face. The more brilliant and vivid the reflection, the deeper the flower seems to bow.
